As the relationship between dance music and the massively popular video game Fortnite deepens, so too does the opportunity to make a positive IRL impact via this connection.
Perpetual do-gooder Griz -- who raises loads of money for charity each holiday season via his annual 12 Days of Grizmas initiative, among other year-round endeavors -- teamed up with professional gamer and frequent philanthorpist DrLupo Monday (September 16) to raise money via Fortnite.
Livestreaming from his couch, Griz played against DrLupo and other livestreamres to collect bank for The Trevor Project, an organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention among LGBTQ youth. (Fans will remember that Griz came out in 2017 and has since become a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community.) The livestream was featured on the Twitch homepage, attracted a cool 280,000 viewers and ultimately raised $18,000 for the organization via the fundraising platform Tiltify. DrLupo consistently uses his status as one of the world's most famous Twitch streamers to raise serious money for organizations like the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, to which he's donated over three million dollars to in the last year. Here, he discusses playing against Griz and the mass appeal of Fortnite.
Why did it make sense for you and Griz to pair up? Were you attracted to the other's history of do-gooding?
I've been a fan of Griz's music for a while. On top of that, the opportunity to play with someone like Griz for a good cause seemed like a no brainer. Always a fan of doing good.
Going into the actual game, how confident did you feel that you'd win?
It wasn't about confidence, and it wasn't about winning. Gaming is about having fun. That being said, I definitely had my "try-hard pants" pulled all the way up, just in case!
What makes Fortnite so insanely appealing to people?
A lot of games choose to take themselves too seriously or not seriously enough. The popularity of [Fortnite] is due largely in part to the level of accessibility that it has to so many different age ranges and groups of people. On top of that, there are a lot of little things, from rocket rides to impulse grenades that set Fortnite apart from others.
And how does it feel to use it for good, like you did through this event?
Just like other charity events I've taken part in, every dollar counts. Combining Griz's audience with my audience to help people in need regardless who they are or where they come from will always feel good.
