One popular theory about Rey's parents in The Rise of Skywalker has been debunked. The exclusive Fortnite clip from the upcoming threequel has found its way online and it provides the new evidence to disprove the theory. J.J. Abrams has said in the past that he wanted the upcoming movie to be a satisfying conclusion to the sequel trilogy. The director would not give anything else away, but he did indicate that there is more to Rey's story than The Last Jedi let on.
In the first Rise of Skywalker trailer, Star Wars fans noted that a familiar ship was featured in the footage. The ship in question is the same one Rey saw in The Force Awakens' Forceback scene where her parents/guardians left her on Jakku, which was unfamiliar territory for the young character. Fans automatically went into speculation mode, wondering if Rey's parents were going to show up in the ship again. However, it appears that isn't the case this time around.
Arriving from Fortnite, in the latest clip for The Rise of Skywalker, Rey, Finn, and Poe board a First Order Star Destroyer. They arrive on the Star Destroyer in the very same ship that was featured in the first trailer. Basically, it was not Rey's parents piloting the ship in the recent promotional material for the movie because we now see that it's Rey, Finn, and Poe. With that being said, that doesn't mean Rey's parentage isn't going to be brought up in the movie. Kylo Ren's big reveal in The Last Jedi could have all been one big misdirection to lure her to his side.
In a recent Star Wars 9 TV spot, Kylo Ren says, "I know who you are... I know the rest of your story." This could be further misdirection, or it can prove that Kylo Ren was right all this time. Regardless, Rian Johnson sure did not help matters when handing the next movie off to Colin Trevorrow and later J.J. Abrams. Johnson was able to take all of the speculation about Rey's parentage and squash it, making it unimportant. Some Star Wars fans found that to be a risky, yet powerful move, while others didn't really enjoy it at all.
RELATED: Emperor Palpatine Was Absolutely Dead in George Lucas' Star Wars 9J.J. Abrams has stated multiple times that he will not be making changes to what Rian Johnson did with The Last Jedi. However, there has been some low-key shade thrown on Johnson's movie by Abrams and certain members of the cast over the past few weeks. When it comes down to it, Abrams probably had to make some changes in The Rise of Skywalker in order to appease certain factions of fans. We'll find out soon enough, but we do know that more of Rey's backstory will be looked into at the very least. You can check out the Fortnite clip below, thanks to the Lore Master YouTube channel.
